Pitchfork Music Festival 2009

Posted on | May 2, 2009 | 4 Comments

I swear this is the last summer music festival I’m gonna hype up.

Not that it needs it.

Out of the two Chicago-based music festivals competing for the hard earned money
of indie music lovin’ vagabonds everywhere, I do believe it won out mine.

Just check out this year’s lineup why dontcha:

Friday, July 17

Built To Spill
The Jesus Lizard
Yo La Tengo
Tortoise

On that day, you can vote for the songs you wanna hear on each band’s
setlists.

From Pitchfork’s website:

Here’s how it works: You, the audience, vote on which songs all four bands
Built to Spill, the Jesus Lizard, Yo La Tengo, and Tortoise– will play.
When you buy your ticket, you’ll get a confirmation email. That confirmation
email will include a link to a page where you can vote on which songs from
each band you want to hear. The bands will tailor their set lists accordingly.

Isn’t that special.

Saturday, July 18

The National
Beirut
DOOM
Yeasayer
The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart
Fucked Up
Plants And Animals
Cymbals Eat Guitars ( # )
Matt & Kim
Lindstrøm
Wavves
Ponytail
Bowerbirds ( # )
Charles Hamilton
The Duchess And The Duke
Disappears
Michael Columbia ( # )

Sunday, July 19

Pharoahe Monch
Blitzen Trapper
Frightened Rabbit
The Mae Shi
Black Lips
The Very Best
Mew
Vivian Girls

Beirut, DOOM and Frightened Rabbit (yay!) were just added to the lineup
this week with a promise that there’s still many more bands to be announced.

3-day passes are onsale now for the low low price of 75$. 2-day passes
for 60$ and single day passes for 35$. Purchase them suckers here.

This all goes down July 17-19, 2009 in Union Park.

Update ( 05/16/09 )

Bands with ( # ) next to their names were just added to the lineup.

Autolux : Small East Coast Tour Announced + Other Goodies

Autolux, I love you but you’re bringing me down.

I first fell in love for their blend of art/shoegaze/dream/noise rock back in
2003 when I heard a demo floating around the interweb. Being a HUGE fan of
Greg Edwards‘s previous band Failure, I knew this new band of his wouldn’t
disappoint and gosh darn it, I was right. They also happen to have one of
the best goddamn drummer in the business today in Carla Azar and singer
Eugene Goreshter ain’t too shabby either.

Hence my love for all things Autolux was born.

It’s been five incredibly long years since the release of their magnificent debut
“Future Perfect”.

After it dropped on the masses, critical praise ensued, which begat long years
on the road. I was lucky enough to see them live twice right here in Montreal
opening for Secret Machines and The Raveonettes and last year at South By
Soutwest
where I was lucky enough to attend half a dozen showcases.

Nobody does it better live. The sheer raw power of their music soundscape
will blow your mindhole.

It’s not like they’ve stopped recording new music over the years.

In 2006, they wrote an intrumental piece titled “Tears For An Inhaler” for an
exhibit called “Sonic Scenery” at the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles.

in 2007, they recorded a song for UNKLE’s “War Stories” album titled “Persons
& Machinery”
.

In 2008, worked had begun on their sophomore album titled “Transit, Transit”.
Problem is, they were no longer on Epic Records‘s roster so a search for a
new label began.

The single “Audience No. 2” was released last May through their website under
the “pay as you want” model to give the band some change in their pocket.
It was re-released last November, this time with a new instrumental titled
“Fat Kid” and a Beatles cover of “Helter Skelter”.

In the last newsletter sent out back in February, it was mentioned that they
were wrapping up all business/non-business endeavors regarding their record
and other career-oriented activities” and that in a future newsletter, an
exact release date will be known to us all aswell as a revamped website is
in the works.

so it could only mean good things, right?

The pig sniffles will most probably wipe us all before they’re finally ready
to unleash this new opus onto the world at large but you never know …

Ever the optimist.

A bunch of new songs from “Transit, Transit” have found their way on recent live
show setlists and as expected, they’re pretty damn good.

They’ll be back on the road in conjunction with their appearance at The All
Tomorrow’s Parties
@ the Kutshers Country Club in Monticello, NY (Sept 12)
for a small east coast tour.

Sept. 08Black Cat ( Washington, DC ) * Tickets *
Sept. 09Johnny Brenda’s ( Philadelphia, PA) * Tickets *
Sept. 10Paradise ( Boston, MA ) * Tickets *
Sept. 12ATP New York ( Monticello, NY ) * Tickets *
Sept. 14Bowery Ballroom ( New York, NY ) * Tickets *
Sept. 15Music Hall Of Williamsburg ( Brooklyn, NY ) * Tickets *

Count me in for both NYC shows.

I do have a little treat for y’all.

Two recent live recordings found their way online.

First one courtesy of the “Recording L.A.” Blog for The Music Box @ the Fonda
Theater
show in Hollywood back in January. New songs can be heard aswell as
a cover of Velvet Underground’s “After Hours”. Pictures of that night can be
seen on prefixmag.com.

The Music Box @ Fonda – Hollywood, CA ( 01.17.2009 )

The second recording (done by a fellow name “dars”) is of the April 5th show
@ The Glass House in Pomona, California. 4 new songs were performed.

The Glass House – Pomona, CA ( 04.05.2009 )

You best believe that when the dime is dropped on that release date
they’ve promised us in the near future, you’ll be the first to know.

Contest: The Kills @ La Tulipe ( May 6, 2009 )

Posted on | April 27, 2009 | 1 Comment

One of the coolest duo in rock, Jamie “Hotel” Hince and Alison “VV” Mosshart
are back in town for the third time and almost a year to the day when they
first unleashed their 3rd and best album “Midnight Boom” in a live setting
@ the Cabaret Music Hall.

Their live shows usually oozes the raw, sexual, sleazy, blues-y garage rock the duo
is well known for.

This shall go down @ La Tulipe, May 6th at 8:30pm with Magic Wands and
The Horrors starting out the night festivities.

I believe the show is already sold out but do not fret people!

Thanks to the good people at CJLO, promoting this night and celebrating their
one year anniversary of being part of Montreal‘s AM airwaves, I have a pair
of tickets to give away.

How:

Email me AT gooddayairplaycontest (AT) gmail (DOT) com with “I Loves Me
Some Kills”
in the subject line and your full name in the body of the
message by midnight, May 4th.

To win said tickets, you must answer this simple question: What is the name
of Alison’s new band with Jack White?

You can read an in-depth feature with Alison done for Interview Magazine
and thanks to Chromewaves, you can listen to “Crazy”, a Patsy Cline cover
they did for an acoustic session they recorded for iTunes earlier this year.

As for opening band The Horrors, you can stream their new albumPrimary
Colours”
which comes out May 5th on XL Recordings at Spinner and check out
the music video for “Who Can Say” directed by Jesus And Mary Chain‘s Douglas Hart.
