Osheaga 2009: Beastie Boys Out, Vampire Weekend In

Posted on | July 24, 2009 | No Comments

It’s fair to say that the most talked about news in the music world this
week was Beastie Boys’s Adam Yauch announcing to the world that he had
cancer. A tumor was found in one of his Parotid Glands which is located
in the back of his throat.

“luckily it was caught early and is localized in one area, and as such
is considered very treatable.”
so says the press release. Luckily for
him (and us), it won’t effect his vocal chords so he’ll still be able
to drop some mad, raspy science on us for years to come.

Watch Adam’s video announcement here:

Of course, he has to have this treated right away which means all of
the Beastie Boys’s upcoming festival appearances (Osheaga, Lollapalooza,
Austin City Limits
) had to be canceled and the release of their
new album Hot Sauce Committee, Pt. 1 has been pushed back.

As you can imagine, that put the Osheaga and All Points West organizers
in quite the jam. A mad scramble ensued to find their replacement.

APW got Jay-Z to fill. Apparently, it will be his first festival appearance
on american soil.

For us, Osheaga decided to bump Yeah Yeah Yeahs to headliner status
and added Vampire Weekend (who were already appearing at APW) to
the lineup aswell. It will be their second appearance in Montreal
after their barely attended show @ Club Lambi back in December 2007
and their first since their S/T debut album hit it big back in ’08
in this big ‘ol hipster-y world we live in.

Gotta say i’m happy with this decision. Of course, seeing Hova in
the flesh would’ve been nice but getting a 90 minute set from YYYs,
ain’t too shabby either.

Vampire Weekend will hit the River Stage @ 4:45pm and Yeah Yeah
Yeahs
will close out Sunday night on the same stage
starting @ 9:30pm.

Osheaga 2009: The Schedule

Posted on | July 17, 2009 | 1 Comment

The peeps at Osheaga finally revealed the schedule with the band
line-up
for each days and set times.

Surprisingly, I only have one conflict on my schedule for the whole
weekend and that’s between The Roots and Lykke Li but really, The Roots
got the upper hand on this one.

As the Osheaga organizers likes pointing out, “Line-up subject to change
without notice” and it will from past experiences so make sure to check
back the day before it goes down see if indeed changes were made.

I’ve bolded up the bands I plan on catching. Elbow is definitely my top
pick for Saturday and I’d say it’s a tie between Yeah Yeah Yeahs and
Beasties Boys for Sunday.

What are your picks for the weekend?

With all this touring and nothing to promote except perhaps their greatness,
one can assume that sumthin’ a brewin’ in the Autolux Camp. Will the news
of a release date for the new album be announced shortly to coincide with
said tour?

One can hope.

Even if it’s only a tour just for the sake of touring, I’m fine with it.
I’ve seen them live half a dozen times now (with both upcoming NYC shows
to look forward to) and they never disappoint.

2009 Ontario Virgin Music Festival ( Lineup Announced )

Posted on | July 14, 2009 | No Comments

At long last, the Ontario (not Toronto’s) Virgin Music Festival lineup
has been unveiled.

It shall go down August 29-30.

Goodbye Toronto Islands Park, hello Burl’s Creek! which is near Orillia,
Ontario
, down highway 400, an hour trek from downtown Toronto … or so
i’m told.

The reason for the move?

“We’ve always wanted to bring the European festival experience to Canada,”
says Virgin Festival director Andrew Bridge. “[Virgin President] Richard
Branson has always told us, ‘you guys throw a great party, it’s just too
bad you can’t do camping.'”

Here’s the lineup (with more to be announced in the coming weeks):

Saturday, August 29

Pixies
Franz Ferdinand
Ben Harper & The Relentless7
Paolo Nutini
Grizzly Bear
Mates Of State
Sloan
Lights
Plants & Animals
Down With Webster
The Rural Alberta Advantage
Iglu & Hartly
Anjulie
Candy Coated Killahz

Sunday, August 30

Nine Inch Nails
Pet Shop Boys
Our Lady Peace
N.E.R.D.
Cold War Kids
Mute Math
Mew
Thunderheist
Coeur De Pirate
The Von Bondies
Datarock
HyperCrush
Trouble Andrew
Silver Starling
The D’Urbervilles
Sean Kingston
Melanie Fiona
The New Cities

Pretty eclectic lineup fo’ sure.

The biggest draws for me and i’m sure most of the people who
will show up this year will be NIN (their last show on Canuck
soil
) and Pixies. Franz Ferdinand, Grizzly Bear, Sloan, Mute
Math, Mew
… are bands I’d see headline a show any day of the week.

Now, as for the whole camping situation? gotta say, not my favorite
thing to do but it would be something interesting to experience.
More interesting will be to see how many people will actually
go for it and rough it out with thousands of their fellow Virgin-goers.

Each camp sites will cost you 100$ for 2 days (135$ for 3).
Get the lowdown here.

Virgin as also provided a list of hotels near the site where you can
set up shop.

There will be shuttles leaving from the Barrie Bus Terminal to get
to the festival site.

Weekend Passes
are 99$ and the VIP Weekend Passes will set you back
275$ bones.

They go on sale this Saturday @ Noon.
