Finally!

After a very long, 7 years wait, Bristol trip-hoppers Massive
Attack
are finally ready to release their 5th studio album titled
“Heligoland” on February 9th, 2010.

As always, a kick ass list of guest vocalists will be featured
on this new opus which this time around includes: TV On The Radio‘s
Tunde Adebimpe, Martina Topley-Bird, frequent MA contributor
Horace Andy, Elbow‘s Guy Garvey, Hope Sandoval and Blur‘s Damon Albarn.

Tracklist:

1. Pray For Rain (Feat. Tunde Adebimpe)
2. Babel (Feat. Martina Topley-Bird)
3. Splitting The Atom (Feat. Robert Del Naja / Grant Marshall / Horace Andy)
4. Girl I Love You (Feat. Horace Andy)
5. Psyche (Feat. Martina Topley-Bird)
6. Flat Of The Blade (Feat. Guy Garvey)
7. Paradise Circus (Feat. Hope Sandoval)
8. Rush Minute (Feat. Robert del Naja)
9. Saturday Come Slow (Feat. Damon Albarn)
10. Atlas Air (Feat. Robert del Naja)

Founding member Robert Del Naja (3D) created that cool looking yet somewhat
disturbing artwork.

Portishead‘s Adrian Utley plays guitar on a track, Damon Albarn plays bass
and keyboards on 2 tracks and that a remix album by fellow electro /
dubstep UK producer Burial is in the works as well.

As for touring, they’ve just announced a few more UK dates in February
and are expected to announce a U.S. tour next year.

In the meantime, you can stream some of those new songs from the
“Splitting the Atom” EP released last month, which features 2 album
tracks and 2 album track remixes.

1. Splitting The Atom
2. Pray For Rain
3. Bulletproof Love (Van Rivers and The Subliminal Kid Remix)
4. Psyche (Flash Treatment)

Beck’s Record Club: Songs Of Leonard Cohen

Posted on | November 18, 2009 | 2 Comments

The 2nd edition of Beck’s Record Club ended a few weeks back.

Devendra Banhart, members of MGMT, Andrew from Wolfmother, Binki from
Little Joy and Brian Lebarton and Bram Inscore from the first edition
all joined Beck in the studio to record in one day, Leonard Cohen‘s
1968 debut album “Songs Of Leonard Cohen”.

Which you can download right here:

( Album ) Beck’s Record Club: Songs Of Leonard Cohen ( 2009 )

01. Suzanne
02. Master Song
03. Winter Lady
04. Stranger Song
05. Sisters Of Mercy
06. So Long, Marianne
07. Hey, That’s No Way To Say Goodbye
08. Stories Of The Street
09. Teachers
10. One Of Us Cannot Be Wrong

The 3rd Record Club is already underway.

Covering another Canadian (this time from Windsor, Ontario) Skip
Spence
was part of the 60’s psychedelic scene. He was the original
Jefferson Airplane drummer who only played on their first album.

He went on to form San Fransisco‘s legendary 60’s psychedelic
band Moby Grape, writing songs and playing guitar, released
a few albums until 1968, that’s when Skip, ingesting massive
amounts of LSD at the time, went coocoo for Cocoa Puffs and
was committed to NY’s Bellevue Hospital for 6 months, diagnosed
as a schizophrenic.

When he got out in ’69, Skip drove directly to Nashville to
record the now-classic psychedelic/folk album “Oar”.
Mental illness, drug addiction and alcoholism prevented
him to do much of anything music wise for the rest of
his life.

He died in 1999 of lung cancer.

This 3rd Record Club session was recorded last June with
Wilco (landing their talents on 8 songs), Jamie Lidell
(who’s new album his produced by Mr. Hansen) Canadian
songstress Feist, drummer James Gadson, Jeff Tweedy‘s
son Spencer who also played drums and Brian Lebarton
from the last two Record Club sessions.

Here’s the first song posted online titled “Little Hands”:

The Flaming Lips – “Watching The Planets”

A throng of hippie boys and girls in a forest, riding bicycles and or walking
around in the nude, while carrying around that famous giant plastic
bubble the Lips are so fond of with Wayne Coyne trapped inside. If you always
wanted to see Coyne’s dangling participle, your prayers i’ve been finally
answered. Co-directed by Wayne Coyne & George Salisbury.

From their new album titled “Embryonic”.

Girls – “Lust For Life” (Director’s Cut)

Friends of the band in various stages of undress (boobs and dicks galore).
One of those friend’s boner is used as a microphone. Oh those wacky,
hipster kids and their shenanigans. Directed by Aaron Brown.

From their debut album titled “Album”.

The BPA Feat. David Byrne & Dizzee Rascal – “Toe Jam”

Might remember this gem from Norman Cook‘s (a.k.a. Fatboy Slim) new project
The BPA and their debut album “I Think We’re Gonna Need A Bigger Boat”
when it went viral last year.

Young, pretty people at a swinging 70’S party shaking what their mama gave
them with strategically placed black bars (I curse thee!) to hide the goodies
and in the process, turning censorship into an art form. Directed by Keith Schofield.

Björk – “Pagan Poetry”

Bjork‘s 2001 album Vespertine (One of my favorites of the ’00s) which also
produced well crafted music videos much like this one where the Bjork-ster
wears a dress only covering her bottom half thus in the process, sharing
her chesticles with the world. Directed by Nick Knight.

Filthy & Afraid
Everything’ll Be Made Right
Do The Vampire
Shuck & Jive
Sold You An Alibi
Cheap Poltergeists
Pine Away

Superdrag was the main reason I went to my first CMJ this year.

Been a fan of their kick ass rock n’ roll for years and had the
chance to see them live for the first time earlier this year @ SXSW,
playing a short set @ Guero’s Taco Bar, which left me hungry for
more. I wanted to experience a complete performance from the ‘Drag
crew.

This was just a straight up, no bullshit performance. We had a
taste song wise, from every album in their catalog except
for “Last Call For Vitriol”. Some of those songs were
fan requests from their message board which were very
well received by the very appreciate crowd.

I don’t know what else to say really, only that they melted my
face off with their giant sized, stadium ready hooks and really
it’s all I can ask for. I really hope 2010 brings them much more
attention and people start catching on to their rock n’roll
badassery.

I managed to film 4 complete songs, 3 from the Highline show and
one from earlier in the day @ Pianos where they performed for
the Skewer CMJ Party. Pictures from that set can be seen here.

Superdrag – “Gimme Animosity” (Pianos)

Superdrag – “Do The Vampire”

Superdrag – “Cynicality”

Superdrag – “Aspartame”
