2010 Osheaga Music Festival ( Lineup Announced )

Posted on | March 24, 2010 | 2 Comments

Now that I’m back from SXSW, It’s time to think about other music
festivals I get to look forward in the coming Summer season.

First up, the 5th edition of our own local little slice of the Summer
music festival pie, I speak of course of Osheaga, which is held
each and every year @ Parc Jean-Drapeau on île Sainte-Hélène.

The island portion of the festival goes down Saturday, July 31st /
Sunday, August 1st
.

Osheaga In the The City, which started last year in clubs all
over the city, set up as a pre-party to the big 2 day shindig
will go down this year July 28-31.

Each year the festival’s been in operation, one of the biggest
request band wise to the Osheaga organizers was to bring local
indie rock heroes, the mighty Arcade Fire to the island. Well,
seems they’ve finally caved in has they will be the headliners for
Day numero 1.

They also needed one giant, popular/commercial band to bring
asses trough the gates (that was Coldplay‘s job last year)
and this year we have Weezer.

If they could stick mostly setlist wise to the Blue Album and
Pinkerton that would be awesome (for me and to a shitload
of thirtysomethings who were in high school when those albums
actually came out) but sadly, those days are long gone.

The John Spencer Blues Explosion (!!!) need I say more?

And of course, we get the Pavement reunion tour to play in our city.
It was touch and go there for awhile wondering if a date would
be scheduled for us Montrealers and it finally took Osheaga
to make it happen.

Thanks O.

Avi Buffalo
Bahamas
Jimmy Cliff
Beach House
(In town playing a sold out show @ La Sala Rossa – March 29th)

SXSW 2010: Nicole Atkins + Sparklehorse Cover

Posted on | March 20, 2010 | No Comments

Always nice to catch a Nicole Atkins performance (with her
new band “Future Clouds & Radar”) @ SXSW.

This year it was @ the Brooklyn Vegan Day Party happenin’
@ Club De Ville.

She closed out her set with a very nice cover of Sparklehorse‘s
“It’s A Wonderful Life” in tribute to Mark Linkous, who sadly
passed away a week ago.

MVs Collection #14 ( SXSW 2010 )

Posted on | March 16, 2010 | 1 Comment

In Austin right now (on my b-day no less) enjoying the warm Texas sun and waiting
for the SXSW festivities to begin.

Gonna catch a movie at the sweetest theater known to mankind (Alamo Drafthouse)
and I should be back to full blogging power in the middle of next week.

Every year, SXSW gives me a chance to catch at least 2 or 3 bands where I can’t
believe my gosh darn luck that I’m actually gonna see them play live.

Last year it was Superdrag, the year before Autolux (multiple times) and this year,
I have 2 such bands I will get the opportunity to see in zee flesh.

Kashmir – “Surfing The Warm Industry”

A secretary working her way up the corporate ladder the only way
she knows how … bangin’ dudes. Directed by Anders Morgenthaler.

The Danish Radiohead … is what they’ve been known to be called.

That’s what attracted me to their sound and why i’ve followed them
for years, since their 2003 album “Zitilites” which is where this
song originates.

I will finally get a chance to see Kashmir live Friday, March 19th4pm
@ The Music Gym and or 11pm @ Maggie Mae’s Rooftop.

New album “Trespassers” out now.

Rival Schools – “Used For Glue”

Two crazy, hipster kids hooking up at a house party. Directed by Marcos Siega.

A classic post-hardcore album (2001‘s “United By Fate”) from
ex-members of Quicksand, Gorilla Biscuits, CIV and Youth Of Today.

They were a hardcore supergroup of sorts who wrote some catchy as
hell tunes for their one and only album (there’s an unreleased
album
floating around).

They’ve disbanded in 2003 but reformed in 2008 to do a few live
shows here and there and now @ SXSW.

Good news that came from all this recent touring? A yet to be
titled 3rd album should be out this summer.

Saturday, March 20th11:15pm @ Red 7 Patio.

Also, check out Spinner daily during the week for a special show featuring
Rival Schools which will be announced the day of.

MVs Collection #13 ( SXSW 2010 )

Posted on | March 14, 2010 | No Comments

I loves me the Power Pop. I try to catch as many bands as I possibly
can while I’m @ SXSW.

There will be this huge outdoor show @ Auditorium Shores Stage with
90’s alt rock bands Cracker, The Bodeans (remember that Party Of
Five
theme song?) and legends of the genre … Cheap Trick.

This goes down Friday, March 19th starting @ 6pm.

Here’s my top 3 picks:

Bleu – “No Such Thing As Love”

A parade of hot ladies (in bras and panties) looking straight into
Bleu‘s camera all sexy like. Directed by David J Dowling.

Bleu (aka William James “Bleu” McAuley III) came back last year
with a new solo album titled “A Watched Pot”. He released one
of my favorite power pop albums of 2002 with “Redhead”.

Pretty stoked to finally see do his thing live.

He’s got 2 shows scheduled @ SXSW:

Friday, March 19th9pm @ Cissi’s Market
Saturday, March 20th3pm @ The Hideout Theatre

The 88 – “Go Go Go”

Stop motion filming put to great effect in the 88’s practice space
where wacky band hijinx ensues.

Known these days as the band behind the “Community” theme song, their
last release was 2008’s “Not Only…But Also”. They shall bring their
brand of shiny power pop to SXSW at these following venues:

Thursday, March 18th5pm @ The Side Bar and 9:30pm @ La Zona Rosa.

Big Star – “Thank You Friends”

This video was edited together from footage of the band shot by Chris
Bell
and Andy Hummel while they were in the studio recording their
1972 debut, the classic “#1 Record”.

The granddaddies of the genre and one of it’s most influential,
Big Star will be one of the acts closing out the festival. They will
perform @ Antone’s (backed by Jon Auer and Ken Stringfellow of The Posies)
at 12:30am.
