Posted on | April 28, 2010 | No Comments

Well …

Haven’t had one of those in awhile.

Thanks to the kind folks @ Greenland, I have a pair of tickets to give away.

How:

Email me AT [email protected]

Subject line:  “I Want Some Joy That’s Formidable”

With your full name in the body of the message by midnight, May 3rd.

To win said tickets, you must answer this simple question:

Name another band with the word “Joy” in it’s name.

Hint: I blogged about one of them 9 posts ago.

This couldn’t be easier.

The winner will be notified Tuesday, May 4th.

Good luck.

Welshians by birth but now London-based, rock threesome The Joy Formidable
will hit our shores this coming May to promote their self-produced first EP
(or is it mini-album?) “A Balloon Called Moaning”, set to be released
through Passion Pit’s Ayad Al Adhamy new label Black Bell on May 4th.

I discovered them thanks to their very catchy debut single “Austere”.

Then, they did something very smart in that they offered their entire album
for free
on NME back in early 2009 which gave them lots of attention in the
UK press and from that gesture, soon a fan base started to grow.

For me, the fact that they were a throwback to mid-90’s female fronted bands
like Belly, Throwing Muses or Lush with their crunchy/fuzzy guitars and great
melodious hooks, sealed the deal.

Going on their first headlining tour of North America, Montreal was lucky enough
to make the cut.

May 5th @ the Green Room (w/ NYC band The Dig opening) 12$ at the door
or purchase your tickets through Admission.

Apr. 30 – Full Moon Resort ( Big Indian, NY )
May. 01 – Mercury Lounge ( New York, NY )
May. 02 – Bamboozle Festival ( E. Rutherford, NJ )
May. 04 – Horseshoe Tavern ( Toronto, ON )
May. 05 – Green Room ( Montreal, QC )
May. 06 – Harper’s Ferry ( Boston, MA )
May. 07 – Kung Fu Necktie ( Philadelphia, PA )
May. 08 – Jillian’s ( Albany, NY )

New single “Popinjay” came out earlier this month. A preview of their upcoming
debut album
which should see the light of day later this year.

We may have lost an hip hop legend to the Grim Reaper on Monday but
there’s still some talented MC’s outthere keeping that true, old school Hip Hop
flame alive.

Shad (née Shadrach Kabango) is one of these cats.

Hailing from London, ON, I do believe he’s one if not the dopest MC
Canada has ever produced. (Suck it Snow!)

If you don’t believe me, check out his 2007 Polaris Music Prize and Juno
nominated sophomore album “The Old Prince” and you’ll hear the greatness
I speak of. Tight rhyming skills and a sick flow to match.

His new album TSOL (3 years in the making) shall drop on us May 25th.

A video for the first single “Yaa I Get It” was just unleashed:

The man wants us to spread the word and I’ve happily obliged.

He’ll also be spreading the gospel through a just scheduled
Canadian tour this coming May.

What’s missing here?

A Montreal date.

But I’m sure Shad’s got his top men on the case to rectify
that situation.

May. 27 – Pyramid ( Winnipeg, MB )
May. 28 – Amigo’s ( Saskatoon, SK )
May. 29 – Starlite ( Edmonton, AB )
Jun. 03 – Biltmore ( Vancouver, BC )
Jun. 04 – Sugar ( Victoria, BC )
Jun. 05 – Habitat ( Kelowna, BC )
Jun. 06 – Republik ( Calgary, AB )
Jun. 08 – Exchange ( Regina, SK )
Jun. 12 – Opera House ( Toronto, ON )
Jun. 15 – Casbah ( Hamilton, ON )
Jun. 16 – Red Dog ( Peterborough, ON )

R.I.P. Guru

Posted on | April 20, 2010 | No Comments

Gifted Unlimited Rhymes Universal is no more.

Guru (born Keith Elam) lost his lengthy battle with cancer.

He was 47.

Too damn young to kick the bucket like that.

One of the best MC in all of hip hop and with his ex-partner DJ Premier,
part of the most influential East Coast MC/DJ tandem in Gang Starr.

Can’t forget all those cool Jazzmatazz records.

He will be missed.

Update ( 04. 27. 2010 )

A touching tribute from his brother Harry published in the Boston Globe.

Also, DJ Premier put together a mix in tribute to Guru which you can download
right here.
