Yesterday, I blogged about Greg Edwards‘s previous band Failure.

An amazing, very much under-appreciated band from the 90’s y’all
should get to know and love.

Today, it’s Autolux‘s turn.

After years and years of waiting, this is really happening.

Their sophomore album is really coming out. Even though I wrote
about the album’s tracklist and release date a few months back,
for some reason in the back of my head, I was waiting for that
one more delay.

We’ve had so many over the years what’s a few more months?

But …

With the album’s artwork being unveiled (which BTW: thing of beauty)
I am now super stoked for August 3rd.

Even more exciting?

Tickets for their new North American tour goes onsale today.

And Montreal is finally getting another show! @ La Sala Rossa no less which
is by far my favorite venue in town.

Failure “Fantastic Planet” Out On Vinyl

Posted on | June 10, 2010 | No Comments

An album that gives me and all rock music producers/engineers a geek boner.

It’s been described as the “Dark Side Of The Moon” for the Lollapalooza generation.

70 minutes of pure space rock madness.

The sonic details that went into it’s production, the layers of sounds, the moods
they’ve created, the inventive use of guitar effects and signal processing is just
mind-blowing.

Some backstory for ya:

The album was produced by the band themselves and engineered by frontman Ken Andrews.

Ken, song co-writer/bassist Greg Edwards and drummer Kellii Scott began recording the album in 1995, in a rented home out in the hills outside of Los Angeles owned by Lita Ford of all people.

The songs were being written and recorded on the spot and they would repeat this
process until they had what they needed. Space images, drug addiction, drug-related
experiences and prostitution are used frequently throughout the album’s lyrics.

The album came out in August 1996 on Slash Records (the last album to come out on that imprint) to much critical acclaim but few album sales due to lack of promotion.

A music video was shot to promote the first single “Stuck On You” which was an homage to the James Bond film “The Spy Who Loved Me”. The song peaked at #31 on the U.S. Billboard Mainstream Rock chart and #23 on the Modern Rock chart.

Failure – “Stuck On You”

They toured extensively to support the record and then broke up. Drugs and creative
differences were to blamed but also I think everything was pretty much said with
that album. No way could they have topped themselves.

To commemorate the album’s awesomeness, Warner Bros. just re-issued it as a 2-disc vinyl set.

Order it from Amazon or directly from the band themselves.

There’s also a limited T-shirt you can get your hands on.

They shot a video teaser for the vinyl release which features Ken and Greg:

Also, may I suggest getting “Golden”, a 2005 release which includes a 40 minute
documentary covering the band’s entire history and a disc worth of unreleased
songs
and videos.

Ready To Start (New Song)
Keep The Car Running
We Used To Wait (New Song)
No Cars Go
Haiti
Intervention
Rococo (New Song)
Empty Room (New Song)
Modern Man (New Song)

Encore 1:

Month Of May
Rebellion

Encore 2:

Wake Up (Acoustic)

Last night was the first official show from the AF crew dans La Belle Province
in 3 years (not counting the private show @ the Notman House last Friday) and
it was a doozy.

No big theatrics to which we’ve been accustomed to, just a bareboned, straight
up rock n’ roll hootenanny of a show. Testing out new songs infront of a
crowd that’s already in their pockets.

Close to 90 minutes of pure music bliss.

5 new songs performed in all and a wicked acoustic version of “Power Out”
closed out the night.

Much will be written about this night but for now, I just wanna share
the few pix and videos I took.

Security was VERY present during the night so all of this footage had to
be shot very sneakily. With the way I had to hide the camera from view,
it’s why you’ll mostly see the top of Win’s head and not a full
shot of the stage.

Surely someone will get better footage as the tour goes on but for now,
my guess is you just wanna hear some of the new songs.

Happy to oblige:

Arcade Fire – “Empty Room”

Arcade Fire – “Rococo”

Arcade Fire – “Ready To Start”

Arcade Fire – “We Used To Wait”

Arcade Fire – “Wake Up” (Acoustic)

I know.

It was a big surprise to me too.

“Blood Like Lemonade” (their 7th studio release) is out today in the UK and
June 15th in North America on PIAS records.

Hadn’t heard a peep about this new release until a few days ago when
someone forwarded me the music video for their first single “Even Though”.

Morcheeba – “Even Though”

The biggest surprise of all?

Singer Skye Edwards is back into the fold.

She explains how this reunion came to be in this MySpace post.

You’d think they would be screaming this fact out to the music media at large.
A really good way to promote this new album cuz let’s be honest here, If you
were a fan like me in their heyday, you probably lost a bit of interest in
them once Skye left In 2003 when the Godfrey Brothers kicked her out of the
group and she went on to pursue a solo career to some degree of success.

Not that 2005’s “The Antidote” (with replacement singers Daisey Martey)
and 2008’s “Dive Deep” (a few guest vocalists were used) were
bad albums, it just wasn’t the same.

That sultry voice of hers was the missing ingredient.

I’ve stayed a fan all those years only for the fact that their 1996 debut
“Who Can You Trust?” is one of my all-time favorites and IMHO they were behind
one of the most dark and atmostpheric album to come out of the Trip-Hop era
which is a sound I quite dug and still do to this day.

They haven’t been quite able to replicate that early sound since then but I
do keep hope alive that one day they might.

Haven’t had a chance to listen to the new album yet but hopefully with Skye
back in the band, they’ll bring some of that magic back.

A great band to experience live aswell and we shall once again when they’ll
hit the road this fall for a full US/Canada tour.
