Pop Montreal 2010: Day 2 Picks
Posted on | September 30, 2010 | 1 Comment
Don’t let this rainy day deter you from a great night of shows.
Keeping it local, here’s 3 bands that should razzle and perhaps dazzle
you aswell.
Karkwa @ Metropolis / 8:30pm [ myspace ]
Come hear why most local music critics have cited “Les Chemins
De verre” as this year’s best album La Belle Province unleashed
unto the world and why the were the recent recipient of the
2010 Polaris Prize, the first francophone band to receive said
honor.
Blue Hawaii @ Rialto / 10:00pm [ myspace ]
Local boy-girl duo who’s electro synth pop, will put a smile on your face and
warm the cockles of your heart with their Summer-y ditties.
Their debut “Blooming Summer” is out on cassette (yup, they still
make those) on Arbutus Records.
The Dears @ Mission Santa Cruz / 10:30pm [ ms ]
2nd night of a 3 night residency @ the Portuguese Santa Cruz Church, previewing their 5th studio album by performing it in it’s entirety.
Proceeds from every merch sale at these residency shows
will be donated to Montreal City Mission and War Child.
This yet-to-be-titled LP will be out February 2011
on Dangerbird Records.

Pop Montreal 2010: Day 1 Picks
Posted on | September 29, 2010 | No Comments
And so it begins.
300+ artists playing in dozens of venues around the city from
now till Sunday night.
Big names and up-and-comers alike vying for your attention and your
hard earn money.
I’ll be sharing with you my personal picks, shows I shall be
attending. Sticking mostly to smaller venues and lesser
known artists.
Some you may enjoy.
Lost In The Trees @ Casa Del Popolo / 10pm [ ms ]
A sevensome lead by Ari Picker, Orchestral Folk-Pop from the backwoods
of North Carolina.
Their current release “All Alone In An Empty House” is out now on Anti.
Villagers @ Casa Del Popolo / 11pm [ myspace ]
Irish band fronted by singer/songwriter Conor J. O’Brien.
Dark, folk-pop songs their specialty.
Shortlisted for this year’s Mercury Prize (The XX won). In town minus
his band, doing an acoustic set of songs taken from their debut
“Becoming A Jackal” out now on Domino Records.

12. Enewetak
My other favorite band who happens to be from Seattle, releasing their own brand
spankin’ new album today.
Their 7th studio album in their illustrious 23-year career.
The Jon Auer / Ken Stringfellow tandem is has sharp as ever.
The one-two punch of “So Caroline” and “Take Care Of Yourself” is worth the
price of admission alone.
On this new galette of guitar pop, you will find the gorgeous harmonies/melodies they are known for but also switching gears and going on a more eclectic, experimental tip.
“This record has more of a ‘Science Fiction’ sound to it, if you will, more buzzes and
electronic bells and whistles percolating throughout,” says Auer. “We wanted to keep
everyone’s eardrums guessing with this, always on alert for the next left-of-center
waveform.”
Something else they haven’t done before for an album, welcoming guest musicians in the recording process.
Broken Social Scene’s Lisa Lobsinger appears on the first single, the Stringfellow penned “Licenses To Hide”. The Strangler’s Hugh Crownwell shows up on “Plastic Paperbacks” and Letters To Cleo’s Kay Hanley appears on “The Glitter Prize”.
“Blood/Candy” already cracked my top 3 album list for 2010. I would think most
of my fellow Power Pop lovers would place it has high on their lists aswell.

“The 12 year break is over & school is back in session.
Sign up now.
Knights of the Soundtable ride again!”
That’s how Chris Cornell let us knew on New Year’s Eve (via Twitter)
that Soundgarden had reformed.
No clue what it would actually entail.
New album? Nostalgia tour?
Not quite.
First live show in 13 years went down in their hometown of Seattle @ Showbox
at the Market under the name NudeDragons (an anagram of Soundgarden) last April to a sold out show (in mere minutes) packed with hardcore fans.
Spin Magazine has a write-up of that night.
Then, it was announced that they would headline Lollapalooza 2010.
In early August, details of the “Telephantasm” release was unveiled.
Included in this compilation were fan favorites, some of their hit singles,
live tracks and an unreleased song from their “Badmotorfinger” recording
sessions titled “Black Rain”. Cornell recorded new vocals that were mixed
into the original song.
There’s 3 versions of this release:
The single disc which will be bundled alongside 1 million copies of the
“Guitar Hero: Warriors Of Rock” video game coming out tomorrow for 1 week
only then on October 5th, it shall be sold separately in stores.
You can also purchase expanded versions with an extra CD containing 12 additional tracks and the version I’ll be buying which is the 3 disc set deluxe edition which includes a DVD with all of Soundgarden’s music video.
You can buy on Amazon the 3 disc set here and the MP3 version here or go directly through their official website and get your hands on any version your heart desires.
A pretty sweet animated video, directed by Brendon Small of Adult Swim’s Metalocalypse fame, for “Black Rain” was unveiled a few weeks back.
Very much inspired by Heavy Metal style animation, it’s the guys stepping into action,
saving the earth from a Monster invasion.
Soundgarden – “Black Rain”
There’s this month’s Spin Magazine cover story in which they talk about how and why they’ve reformed and will this go anywhere anytime soon besides the few shows and this new release.
Hopefully it will since I very much wanna hear how Soundgarden would sound today versus their last release, 1996’s “Down On The Upside”. Just don’t involve Timbaland in the mix.
They also happen to be #1 on my “bands I need to see live before I kick it” list.
I came this close back in 1996 for their Quebec Lollapalooza stop but sadly
it was not to be. I have managed to see Cornell live a few times over the years but
it’s not the same.
Soundgarden was THE band back in 1994 that turn my love of music to an obessive one that it is today.
Superunknown to me is as perfect an album there will ever be and to witness songs
from it being performed live, would most definitely melt the little bits of grey
matter I have left in that numbskull of mine.
I sure as hell hope they make it happen.
