Lights On Moscow To Release Debut EP / CMJ 2010 Favorites

What I always hope for when I attend CMJ/SXSW every year, is to walk into a venue,
not knowing some of the bands i’m about to watch and being blown away.
Such a thing happened on a lovely NYC afternoon at CMJ when I went to the MuseBox
showcase @ Bowery Electric two and a half weeks ago.
I was there to catch White Belt Yellow Tag, UK’ers who’ve released one of
my favorite albums of 2010 in their debut “Methods”.
Ended up catching that band’s guitarist side project.
Lights On Moscow (previously known as Matador), a collaboration between
Lanterns On The Lake lead singer Hazel Wilde and Justin Lockey, who’s also
in British Expeditionary Force and was a founding member of the band
yourcodenameis:milo and produces records on the side.
Busy dude.
This side project started as shared musical ideas through emails.
The one band that came to mind right away as I was transfixed was 90’s
psych/dream pop slow-burners Mazzy Star.
Beautiful, hazzy vocals mixed with etheral / luscious / spacious arrangements
with a touch of shoegaze with those sweet crashing guitars.
Really swell stuff.
I’ve been informed by Miss Wilde that their debut EP should be out in the coming months and they will most likely record a full-length in the coming future aswell.
EP Tracklist:
1. Like Lovers Often Will
2. Lord, Let Me Know
3. I Must Come Clean
4. Sketches
In the Meantime, you can download the MP3 for “Lord, Let Me Know” right here, listen to a non-EP track on their MySpace page titled “Spirits Around My Bed” and watch the videos I managed to capture at the Bowery Electric (their first ever show) on YT.

SXSW: 2011 (Very) Preliminary Lineup
Posted on | November 8, 2010 | 1 Comment

With CMJ Music Marathon already 2 weeks old, got’s to think about
my next music festival excursion.
Only 4 months away (or 128 days), That would be the behemoth known
as South By Southwest, held every year in beautiful Austin, TX.
Going down March 16-20, 2011.
Type it down in your fancy iPads.
From this list, I’ve already got half a dozen acts i plan on catching during that most wonderful of week.
Of course, MUCH more will be announced in the weeks to come.

Videos: The Joy Formidable @ Petit Campus (11. 04. 2010)

On a cold, rainy Montreal night, The Joy Formidable were back in town
(almost 6 months to the day) serving us a second helping of their sweet,
melodious shoegaze witnessed by a lucky few @ Petit Campus.
At barely an hour, we got pretty much the same setlist has last time with
maybe one or two new songs thrown into the mix.
I, sadly got there late, missing out on Local band Receivers and their
tour companions from their last U.S. trek, Brooklyn band The Dig.
I did however, manage to record the last 2 songs in their set, the single
“Popinjay” released earlier this year and the stirring closer in “Whirring”
which turned into a crazy, epic, fuzzed out, distorted 8 minute freak out.
Joy Formidable will go for the hat trick by coming back next February, in town
to promote their debut album “The Big Roar”.
They will be in Quebec city tonight, playing @ L’agitée. The remaining tour dates
can be found on their Myspace page.
In the meantime, check out the first single “I Don’t Want To See You Like This”
of said new album in music video form:
