No Joy / Album Launch / Casa Del Popolo / November 27th
Posted on | November 24, 2010 | No Comments

By far the best local release of 2010 is the debut album “Ghost Blonde” by No Joy.
A four-piece band stewarded by guitarist/vocalist Laura Lloyd and Jasmine White-Glutz, a band of that ilk was something I’ve yearned for to show up in
our fair city and call our own.
Their debut is a sweet galette of fuzzed out, noise-y, distorted, feedback heavy,
etheral, melodious Shoegaze. Reminds me quite a bit of early Sonic Youth
but mostly bands I dug in the 90’s Shoegaze scene like Lush or Pale Saints.
It all started November of last year when White-Glutz was living in Los Angeles
and Lloyd was living here. They wrote songs together long-distance until White-Glutz moved back to the 514.
One of their first gigs was @ Friendship Cove (RIP) opening for Best Coast last April (great show, YT clip here) and BC’s Bethany Cosentino like what she heard and Tweeted to her followers that No Joy was “the best band ever” got some buzz
out of it and BC’s label Mexican Summer signed No Joy to their roster.
They enlisted The Raveonettes‘s Sune Rose-Wagner to mix their debut LP and here we are for the album launch.
This Saturday @ Casa Del Popolo with Metz, Ducktails and local band Grimes sharing the bill. — > FB EVENT PAGE
You can only buy tickets online and they’re selling out fast being that Casa
Del Popolo is so very small a venue.
They’ve released a video for the first single “Hawaii” directed
by Salazar.
It is slighty NSFW cuz of dem muddy boobies being shown.

Autolux 7″ Single The Bouncing Wall / Census Out December 6th
Posted on | November 23, 2010 | No Comments

Time for a new release.
They’ve been so prolific as of late (by Autolux standards) trust me you won’t
hear me complain.
A new 7″ vinyl/digital release for the double A-side single “The Bouncing Wall” / “Census”.
Tracklist:
1. The Bouncing Wall
2. Census
3. 23 Watt Apple Juice (B-side)
4. Kissproof (Remix By Bobby Evans)
5. Black Leaves (Kill Pixie Art Installation Mix)
Of course, what i’m excited about here are the B-sides and FINALLY! we get
a studio recording for “23 Watt Apple Juice” which has been a staple of their
early live sets. However, seems they’ve dropped the vocals off the track but
I’ll take it regardless.
Other B-side being “Black Leaves” which the press release informs me that
it was used for a sound installation they’ve created for the Mark Walen
(Kill Pixie) show, which ended earlier this month @ Paralleled Opposites at
the Merry Karnowsky Gallery in Los Angeles.
How nice.
The 7” vinyl picture disc is limited to 500 copies (comes with 3 limited
edition postcards) and will be released December 6th to coincide with their
small European tour. — > Tickets.

( Album ) Beck’s Record Club: Yanni’s Live At The Acropolis ( 2010 )
01. Santorini
02. Keys To Imagination
03. Until The Last Moment
04. The Rain Must Fall
05. Acroyali/Standing In Motion
06. One Man’s Dream
07. Within Attraction
08. Nostalgia
09. Swept Away
10. Reflections Of Passion
The fifth installment in Beck’s Record club.
The lowdown on this one:
The original album featured Yanni with a full orchestra at the Athenian Acropolis.
A TV special of the concert was played repeatedly on PBS through the mid 90’s.
To flesh out the complex arrangements, several studio musicians were brought in
to read a heavily doctored score with interpolations of everything from Stravinsky
to Bobby Brown (and others).
Beck and Thurston Moore from Sonic Youth provided auxiliary music and noise,
with Thurston improvising lyrics over the previously instrumental track ‘Santorini.’
Tortoise show up later on a few other tracks.
Look for the complete rerecording of this musical monolith, originally captured
at the bedrock of Western Culture, done here at Sunset Sound Studios on June 13th, 2010.
You can download the previous 4 Record Clubs here, here, here and here.
No announcement yet on the 6th edition of the club or even if there will be a next installment but right now, Mr. Hansen is asking you to vote for your 10 favorite covers of the past 5 albums which will be turned into a compilation to be released in the near future.
