MVs Collection #02 ( SXSW 2009 Edition )
Posted on | March 7, 2009 | 2 Comments

I’ll be posting my annual SXSW podcast on Wednesday but here’s the thing …
had so many choices in what I wanted to feature for this year’s festivities
that I had to cut my playlist way the frak down.
So, why not use those that were left out and present them in a MVs Collection’s
posting.
Hence these picks of bands I’ve played on my show before (some more than once)
and these very picks I plan on seeing when i’m in Austin 9 days from now.
Dredg – “Same ‘Ol Road”
This song is from their 2002 album “El Cielo”.
Their 2005 album “Catch Without Arms” was my favorite of that year so saying that
I’m eagerly anticipating their new album “The Pariah, The Parrot, The Delusion”
would be an understatement.
It’s coming out May 19 on their own label Ohlone Recordings. They’re doing only
two shows at SXSW both starting at 1am, March 21st @ Buffalo Billiards and the
next day @ Emo’s Jr.
They’ll be on tour till the end of April.
Sadly no Canadian dates.
The bastards.
The Bird And The Bee – “Love Letter To Japan”
They to have two shows set up on March 21st, first one @ Karma Lounge at the
stroke of midnight then at 6pm for an in-store performance @ Waterloo Records
which I’m very excited about since i’ve heard only good things about the place.
Shad – “The Old Prince Still Lives At Home”
The pride and joy of London, Ontario and by far the best hip hopper we got
north of the border today.
This video is Shad’s take on The Fresh Prince of Bel Air‘s opening credits on
a very limited budget and by god he pulled it off quite well.
He’ll be at South By trying to impress the industry big whigs and he’ll blow
them away no doubt. You’ll be able to catch him this summer on the Warped Tour.
March 20th @ Wave at 8pm then @ The Music Gym Patio — 11:55pm.
March 21st @ SESAC Day Stage Cafe Austin Convention Center — 2:30pm.
School Of Seven Bells – “Half Asleep”
Doing 4 shows in 2 days one being in the backlot of a Urban Outfitters store.
March 19th @ Buffalo Billiards — midnight.
March 20th @ Emo’s Jr. — 3pm
March 20th @ Radio Room Patio — 10pm
March 21st @ Urban Outfitters — 5pm
Glasvegas – “Flowers & Football Tops”
Their self-titled debut album is still in heavy rotation in my pod months after it’s release.
Even tough they’ll be in town beginning of April with their own headlining tour,
I will make it my mission to catch all their SXSW showcases which are:
March 18th @ Vice — 11:45pm
March 20th @ The Spin Magazine Party — TBD
March 20th @ La Zona Rosa — 11:30pm

SXSW: Essential Websites To Help Improve Your SXSW Experience
Posted on | March 4, 2009 | 2 Comments

For all you SXSW virgins outthere, don’t fret.
I too was one last year and let me tell you, this whole week you’re about
to experience of nothing but live music, free food and booze and hobnobbing
with fellow music nerds will change your life for the better.
It may seem overwhelming right now, choosing to see one band over another,
trying to figure out the location to all those venues, finding all the good
places to eat …etc.
To make it easier for you, I’ve compiled a list of essential websites that
will enhance your SXSW experience.
I’ve broke it off into 4 categories:
Show Listings
The one site that should be on top of your list is SCHED*.
Every single official and unoffical showcases will find it’s way there.
The main attraction is of course to customize your own schedule. You can
share said schedule with your friends and keep track of all the shows
your favorite bands will be playing during the week.
Also worth checking out is Paul’s Artist Catalog which gives you a
bio on all the bands/artists coming to SXSW with links to their
Last.fm / Flickr / YouTube pages.
Here’s a few more:
SXSW.com
Austin360
Oh My Rockness
Austinist
Showlist Austin
Do512
Ultra8201
Blog Coverage
Where to get the news on all those day parties scheduled outside of
SXSW’s control. There’s really only one place to go and that’s @
DoneWaiting.
www.donewaiting.com/category/sxsw/
They reign supreme in that department. I very addictively check their
site at least 15 times a day just to see their latest updates.
SCHED* gets their blog on aswell.
sxswblog.sched.org
There’s also SXSW Baby! that gives you the skinny on all the SXSW
happenings be it music, films and the Interactive portion of the
festival. they’ve set up a message board aswell where you can
discuss said happenings with fellow attendees.
www.sxswbaby.com
www.sxswbaby.com/index.php/forums/
Another forum to discuss all things SXSW is @ SXSW ’09 Insider’s guide.
And if you subscribe to mailing lists on YahooGroups, there’s one set up for
the festival.
Unofficial SXSW Info
launch.groups.yahoo.com/group/unofficial_sxsw_info
With 1500+ members, it’s definitely a place that will keep you up to date.
Social networks
They all have their own groups and pages set up specifically for SXSW.
Facebook
My Space
Last.fm
Flickr
Twitter
If you’re still looking for a place to stay this late in the game, crashing
on a stranger’s couch may be your best bet.
Transportation And Weather
Austin’s Transit system
www.capmetro.org
I haven’t had the pleasure to use it myself but i’ve heard that during
the festival, it does keep late hours so it might be one way to go.
As for taxis, It’s damn near impossible to get one at 2 am when the night’s
festivities comes to a close but try it none the less. You might get lucky.
Another option at your disposal are the Bicycle Cabs which will be
everywhere you look. If you wanna give your feet a rest, want an
environmentally-friendly ride but mostly would enjoy having a human
slave pedal it’s heart out for you, give them a chance. Their riders
work for tips only, so don’t be stingy.
Seven Day Weather Forecast
weather.ibegin.com
I predict hot and humid weather and possibly a rainless week much
like we enjoyed last year. Expect some gnarly Texas winds aswell.
Finally, if you wanna do SXSW on the cheap, meaning going without
a badge/wristband and just try to hit as many free events as you
can, like I did last year and will do so again this year, check
out this how-to guide:
Out The Other’s Guide To SXSW On The Cheap
That’s it.
I do believe there’s more than enough here to get you going and have a pleasant SXSW experience.

Destination “Rockville, CA”
Posted on | February 25, 2009 | 3 Comments

TV wunderkind Josh Schwartz, the mastermind behind “The O.C.“, “Chuck” and
“Gossip Girl” teamed up with Alexandra Patsavas, his music supervisor on
most of his series to create a new web series titled “Rockville, CA“.
the show in a nutshell:
A group of twentysomethings from diverse backgrounds gather regularly to
hear their favorite up-and-coming bands, blow off steam, fall in love with
the wrong people, and then talk about how they’ve fallen in love with the
wrong people. The series not only explores characters’ interactions with
one another, but also the way in which they relate to music And to Club
Rockville itself.
Now, I’m a sucker for TV series where music is it’s central theme.
You might remember such gems as 2001’s “Dead Last“, 2002’s “My Guide To
Becoming A Rock Star“, 2006’s “Love Monkey” and last year’s “Z Rock“.
You do know what all these series have in common? they all get shitcanned
after a season’s worth of episodes or they get canceled before even
finishing their runs.
For some reason, middle america doesn’t like watching twentysomethings get
their music on.
So, Josh wisely decided to move this project on the interweb. Some web series
have found success on the net. Most notably Marshall Herskovitz / Edward Zwick
series “Quarterlife” which is another show based on the lives of twentysomethings.
“Rockville, CA” will debut online March 17 on TheWB.com website. 20 episodes in all at a running length of 4 to 6 minutes each. A series based in a rock club (shot in the well known L.A. venue the Echoplex) would surely feature live performances and wouldn’t you know it, you’ll get to see one band perform live per episode.
Here’s the list:
Kaiser Chiefs, Phantom Planet, The Duke Spirit, Eagles Of Death Metal,
Earlimart, Frightened Rabbit, The Kooks, The Little Ones, Lykke Li,
Nic Stai, Passion Pit, White Lies, Anya Marina, Bishop Allen,
The Broken West, Cass McCombs, Lights, Oppenheimer,
The Republic Tigers and Travis.
Not a bad lineup.
Alot of those bands are signed to Alexandra’s own label Chop Shop Records.
Ahhhh … ain’t synergy a beautiful thing?
After an episode is posted online, you’ll be able to watch the band featured in said episode being interviewed and you’ll be able to watch their live “Rockville” set in it’s entirety.
From looking at the cast credits, the only 2 names I recognized are Ryan Hansen who
plays “The Douche” in the trailer who played Dick Casablancas on “Veronica Mars“,
that series douchebag. Don’t know what that says about the guy that he’s only able
to find roles playing assholes. Also Natalie Morales a.k.a. Wendy Watson (“Dub Dub”
to her friends) on last year’s ABC Family little seen but oh so awesome series
“The Middleman“.
This show is pretty much if “The O.C.” spent their entire waking moments in
“The Bait Shop”.
You’ll get all the pre-requisite character types that Schwartz is so fond of
in his productions. from the trailer alone, it does look a bit cheesy, the whole music business side of things happening at the club will merely be of use as the background for the inevitable will they or won’t they hook up scenario between the two leads … but the live performances alone may make me wanna log on.
Believe in the Schwartz.
That’s my mantra for this new show. He brought the goods with The O.C.’s first season
and currently with “Chuck“, who knows he might surprise us again.
Here’s the trailer:
The official website: www.rockvilleca.com
Sadly, us non-americans won’t be able to watch it as the WB.com site blocks
out foreigners but with the interweb being what it is, surely will be able
to find a way to catch it none the less.
And a few Schwartz interviews about the show:
