Their last album, “Catch Without Arms” was my pick for album of the year
back in 2005.
I’m glad to say they’re back, no longer on a major label (Interscope),
now running their own shop trough Ohlone Recordings. A new album
2 years in the making will finally see the light of day June 9th.
From the press release:
Produced by Matt Radosevich, Pariah, The Parrot, The Delusion marks
the Bay Area band’s fourth full-length studio album. Though driven by
rhythms and guitars, The Pariah is far from a typical rock album.
Inspired in part by Salman Rushdie’s essay “Imagine There’s No Heaven:
A Letter to the 6 Billionth Citizen,” Dredg capture the madness of the
modern world, particularly its battles over religion and science, within
a musical missive to the future. Fittingly, The Pariah is packaged and
constructed like a letter, its songs and instrumental interludes
connected by eerie, evocative Wurlitzer piano-and-voice segments.
Diverse and textured, these intentional imperfections allow some of
Dredg’s mellowest recorded moments to mingle with some of their harshest.
Dredg and concept albums are like Captain without it’s Tenille or a fat kid
living in a world without cupcakes, you ain’t gonna see it happening.
Not too many bands go the way of the concept album which could be considered
risky in this digital age where singles are more valued.
Not Dredg tough. They have the artistic chops and integrity to pull it
off and they happen to write killer singles so they’ll be surviving just fine.
As for “I Don’t Know”, It certainly doesn’t have the immediate punch as
“Bug Eyes” the first single off the last album with it’s echo-y slide guitar
and singer’s Gavin Hayes soaring vocals on at full blast but it’s definitely
a grower.
I see it more as a safe, commercial choice for radio play. If it helps
people discovering this amazing band, than more power to it.
They’re currently on a HUGE tour of the US of A, spreading the Dredg
gospel. Florida being their next stop and will conclude in Los Angeles
@ the Troubadour May 23rd.
Sadly (and I say that alot when it comes to my favorite bands), no
Canadian dates on this current tour. Hopefully, that will be rectified
in the coming months.
you can pre-order the album now at Amazon.
It will be available on vinyl and a limited edition version with different
artwork and packaging will be offered aswell. Speaking of the artwork,
it was created by Division Day‘s Lead singer Rohner Segnitz.
Tickets for the current North American tour can be purchased here.

Lollapalooza 2009 ( Lineup Announced )
Posted on | April 21, 2009 | No Comments
Meh.
I was waiting to see what the complete lineup would look like and i’m pretty much
underwhelmed.
On the headliners side, only Depeche Mode and Beastie Boys are worth my
time and I’ll be seeing them live a few weeks before Lolla is in full swing.
As for the non-headlining bands, Vampire Weekend, Animal Collective,
Band Of Horses, Silversun Pickups, Glasvegas, The Raveonettes, No Age,
Bat For Lashes, Friendly Fires, Manchester Orchestra does it for me but
would it be worth my time and money just to see those bands i’ve seen many
a times in venues all around my neck of the woods?
Alot of the same bands are on the All Points West bill and you have bands
like Elbow, My Bloody Valentine, Mogwai, Yeah Yeah Yeahs … not on
Lollapalooza‘s which makes it way more appealing to yours truly.
Seems I’ve already made up my mind.
So … What d’yall think?
Happy? Sad? Nonplus about this year’s lineup?

This is Dean Garcia’s new project, the mastermind behind 90’s electro/shoegaze
band Curve with the help of his daughter Rose Berlin on vocals and
Joey Levenson on guitar duties.
I’ve already blogged about SPC ECO (pronounced “Space Echo”) last fall for
muchmusic.com so no need to rehash what’s already been said but just to
add that I have yet to tired of this debut album and look for it to be very
high on my 2009 year-end album list if not having the number one spot outright.
This post is about the SPC ECO crew FINALLY having distributors all around
the world to release this gem of an album in CD form.
Only available as a digital download on their website since January, The U.S. label
Noiseplus Music has taken on the task of unleashing 3-D on the north american
market this week.
Same tracklist as the digital release + a bonus track titled “Spotlight” specific
only for this release.
The Electric Label will be the ones releasing the album for the U.K. / Europe
market. A release date will be announced shortly.
A June release is in store for the Japan market, which I have no doubt will be
received quite well as most dream pop / shoegaze bands are, Quince Records
(well known shoegaze label) will be their distributors in the land of the
rising sun.
The Japanese release will get it’s own bonus track titled “Silver Clouds”
which features Andy Bell of Ride (now full time Oasis member) fame.

The Posies Live @ The Bell House : June 12 : Brooklyn, NY
Posted on | April 10, 2009 | 1 Comment

HOLY. SHIT.
I am overwhelmed with geeky, music nerd joy right now.
I was just informed that The Posies, one of my all-time favorite band
and one of the best power pop group to come out of the 90’s will
be performing in it’s entirety, one of my all-time favorite album,
the 1993 power pop masterpiece “Frosting On The Beater”.
This magical event (which is a one-off) will occur on
June 12th @ The Bell House in Brooklyn, NY.
The one and only time i’ve seen them in the flesh was at the Pop
Montreal music festival back in October 2005.
As you can imagine, that show ranks in my top 5 of the sweetest,
most badass shows i’ve ever had the pleasure to attend.
Jon Auer and Ken Stringfellow have stayed active since releasing
the last Posies album 2005’s “Every Kind Of Light”. Touring
(mostly in Europe), wearing their producers cap for other bands,
starting new groups (Stringfellow‘s The Disciplines) … etc.
I’m just sooo happy that they’ve kept on keepin’ on and that I’ll
have a chance to see them live once again. A new album would be nice
too but I’m guessing we have a few more years of waiting before that
happens.
Visit their official website, MySpace and now Twitter to be in the
know for everything Posies.
Tickets for the Bell House show can be purchased here. Any self respected
power pop fans would be absolutely batshit crazy to miss out on this most
awesome event.
