Editors – “Papillon”
Many dudes running their asses off all around Los Angeles at night.
This very synth heavy (sounding like early 80’s Depeche Mode) first single
is from their third album titled “In This Light and On This Evening” coming out
October 13th.
We Were Promised Jetpacks – “Quiet Little Voices”
A nice performance video from these 4 Scottish lads off their self-titled
debut album and one of my favorite discoveries of 2009. You know the saying
If it’s not Scottish it’s Crap? I believe it to be true.
Directed by Mark Charlton.
They, along with Brakes and The Twilight Sad will be in town playing
@ La Sala Rossa October 9th. This will be the show of the year people.
You best show up.
The Joy Formidable – “Cradle”
The band and various random people Teeter-Tottering their hearts out.
Directed by Neil James Drummond.
Another great debut album (“A Balloon Called Moaning”) from young
Ukers outta Wales that came out earlier this year.
The Big Pink – “Velvet”
Beautifully shot B/W video from this new UK electro rock twosome.
Includes shots of them walking around, looking all dour mixed with
scenes of bondage. Directed by Rob Hawkins.
The latest signees to the 4AD label, their debut album “A Brief History Of Love”
was released in the UK this week and will be released on our side of the world
next Tuesday.
They’ll be Montreal bound November 30th headlining a show @ La Sala Rossa
with Crystal Antlers.

Beck’s Record Club: The Velvet Underground & Nico
Posted on | September 4, 2009 | 5 Comments
The first edition of Beck’s Record Club has come to a close.
If you don’t know what this club is all about, it’s basically Beck
inviting a group of friends in a studio to cover track-for-track
an album of their choosing and record it all in one day. Nothing rehearsed
or arranged ahead of time, they just go for it.
A song from the album is then released once a week as a free download
on Beck’s new re-designed website for all to enjoy.
For this first go-around, they chose to cover the classic 1967 album
“The Velvet Underground & Nico”. They almost went for Digital
Underground’s Sex Packets album which hearing Beck cover
“The Humpty Dance” would’ve been quite the treat.
Participants included this time around were record producer Nigel
Godrich, Joey Waronker, Brian Lebarton, Bram Inscore, Yo, fine actor
and BecK’s brother-in-law Giovanni Ribisi, Chris Holmes, and
Thorunn Magnusdottir.
Here’s an in-depth interview Pitchfork did with Mr. Hansen about the club.
Once you’re done reading that, you can download the full album right here:
( Album ) Beck’s Record Club – The Velvet Underground & Nico ( 2009 )
01. Sunday Morning
02. Waiting For My Man
03. Femme Fatale
04. Venus In Fur
05. Run, Run, Run
06. All Tomorrow’s Parties
07. Heroin
08. There She Goes Again
09. I’ll Be Your Mirror
10. Black Angel’s Death Song
11. European Son
12. Heroin (Alt. Version)
The second Record Club got rolling this week with Devendra Banhart,
Ben, Andrew and Matt from MGMT, Andrew from Wolfmother, Binki from
Little Joy and Brian Lebarton, Bram Inscore from the first edition.
Their album of choice this time around?
Fellow Montrealer and music legend Leonard Cohen and his 1968 debut album
“Songs Of Leonard Cohen”.
Their second choice?
Ace Of Base.
That’s right. Ace Of Base. That … would’ve been something unique for sure.
The first track “Suzanne”, one of Cohen’s most covered songs was just released online.
