CMJ 2009: The Recap

My first CMJ Music Marathon was a fun-tastic one.

Most of my CMJ-ing was done @ Pianos, a great little venue on historic Ludlow St.

I’ve discovered at least half a dozen promising new bands (Seven Saturdays,
Warpaint, Deastro, Peggy Sue, Jeff The Brotherhood , Hurricane Bells,
Pete & The Pirates, Choir Of Young Believers) which will make their
way onto future episodes of AGDFA.

Can’t wait for next year’s edition.

SIANspheric / Casa Del Popolo / November 14th

A week from now, SIANspheric, one if not the best Canadian band doin’ it
shoegaze style, will be back in Montreal for a show @ Casa Del Popolo.

Their last show in our fair city was back in 2005 @ La Sala Rossa where
a good chunk of my hearing was forever lost. Seems an album has been
in the works since 2006. Perhaps we will be privy to some new material
next Saturday.

You’d be craaazy to miss this.

My Dad vs Yours force down post-rock barricades to a state where pop
melodies take precedence over orchestral crescendos; where electronic
beats, slide guitar and shoegaze co-exist in vibrant harmony; where

and mixedb by Howard Bilerman & Efrim Menuck at Montreal’s Hotel2Tango.

Review: Florence + The Machine @ Cabaret (11. 01. 2009)

Londoner Florence Welsh came to town for the first time last nite
@ the Cabaret Music Hall and bewitched us all.

She came to perform her critically praised and well deserved 2009
Mercury Prize nominated debut album “Lungs”.

Backed by a full band (with a big ass Harp in tow) she was just a
big ball of exuberance. She seemed like she had the time of her
life onstage. Also, that forceful voice of hers packed quite the
wallop. The hairs in the back of my neck were at full attention
during the entire 70 minutes set.

Most if not all of the album was performed with a b-side
thrown in for good measure.

Here’s a video of her spirited rendition of “Dog Day’s Are Over”
where she got the crowd to jump around like mad at it’s crescendo. She had
us all in the palm of her hands.

She’ll be back next year (March 2010) for another trek around
North America.

CMJ Music Marathon 2009 ( The Full Schedule )

One of the last, big music festivals of the year, CMJ Music Marathon is back
for it’s 29th year. Taking place in over 75 venues all around New York City.
This all goes down a week from now, October 20-24.

Much like SXSW and all the other big industry music festivals, you got your
showcases where 1300 bands/artists i’ve signed up to be part of this
humongous shinding. You got your panels and conferences with music
industry bigwigs and artists. You got your film festival where the world
premiere of Clooney/McGregor‘s “The Men Who Stare At Goats” will be shown.

Mostly, you come to these festivals to discover new artists, the ones
that made some noise in the past year. Bands like: School of Seven Bells,
Hercules And Love Affair, A-Trak, The XX, The Temper Trap, 2009 Mercury Prize
winner Speech Debelle, Crystal Antlers, Yacht, Rain Machine (TV on The Radio
Kyp Malone’s new solo project) Flying Machines, Malajube, Laura Marling,
The Antlers to name just a few.

Looking trough the entire schedule, these are the ones I would consider
highlights, their showcases I would most definitely attend:

On the Shoegaze/Noise Rock front you got your Ringo Deathstarr, The
Depreciation Guild, Grooms, Ume, School of Seven Bells, The Vandelles,
Japandroids, Dead Leaf Echo, Autodrone, The Happy Hollows, Zaza.

Up and coming bands: The XX, Pocketknife, ExitMusic, The Temper Trap.

Hip Hop: Tanya Morgan, Souls Of Mischief (ol’ school, bitches!), Kidz In
The Hall, X-Ecutioners, Speech Debelle.

Power Pop: The Disciplines (The Posies Ken Strinfellow‘s new band), I Was
A King, Army Navy and the one show you should not miss at all costs … Superdrag.

You have till October 18th to sign up for a badge. 295$ for students and 495$
for everyone else.

Or do what I would do, buy individual tickets at venues of bands you wanna see.
It’s much cheaper and you’re assured entry to the showcase of your choice.
