Trailer Thursdays: The Thing ( 2011 )
Posted on | September 15, 2011 | No Comments

Cast : Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Joel Edgerton, Eric Christian Olsen
Director : Matthijs van Heijningen Jr.
Release Date : October 14, 2011
Synopsis :
Kate Lloyd (Winstead) joins a Norwegian scientific team that has stumbled across a crashed extraterrestrial spaceship buried in the ice of Antarctica. They discover a creature that seems to have died in the crash eons ago.
When an experiment frees the alien from its frozen prison, Kate joins the crew’s pilot, Carter (Edgerton), to keep it from killing and imitating them one at a time, using its uncanny ability to mimic any life form it absorbs through digestion, and potentially reaching civilization.
Look, I’m with you.
I’m sick of all the remakes, reimaginings, rebootings, retoolings of the movies
from my childhood.
Hollywood is clearly creatively bankrupt that they’re now reduced to making movies out of board games. We’ll be seeing “KerPlunk: The Movie” in a theater soon enough. Until that happens, we’ll be getting remakes after remakes of 80’s movies.
John Carpenter’s “The Thing” was a pretty badass sci-fi/horror film from the early 80’s.
Kurt Russell was at the beginning of his full action star mode where just the year
before, had work with Carpenter on “Escape From New York” and the creature work and ground-breaking make up special effects done by Rob Bottin still holds out today.
I must point out that “The Thing” was in itself a remake of the 1951 original.
This prequel has the same story elements as the Carpenter movie but we experience it from the Norwegians camp site.
Instead of Russell, we get the chick from “Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World”, one of the brothers from the just released “Warriors” movie and a first time movie director in Heijningen Jr.
I for one can’t wait to see what they’ve done with it.
To refresh your memories, here’s the trailer from the 1982 classic:

Florence Welsh had quite a run these last few years.
She spent the better part of it on the road. Nominated for all kinds of
awards (Mercury, BRIT, Grammys) and her music was heard all over TV and
movies.
It’s surprising she even had time to record her follow up album but here
we are.
Titled “Ceremonials”, it will see the light of day in the UK October 31st
and the next day, November 1st in North America.
For this new album, she went back to work with Paul Epworth, who co-produced
her debut “Lungs”, and recording took place at the very famous Abbey Road
Studios in London. Florence talked a bit about the recording process with
Pitchfork and Exclaim.
We got a taste of it last month with the teaser track “What The Water Gave Me”,
a thundering, soulful, choir/string heavy single. Now, you can hear the lead single
“Shake It Out” in streaming form:
Florence + The Machine – “Shake It Out”
A deluxe version of the album will be available which will include more new songs, unheard demos and acoustic versions of “Heartlines”, “Shake It Out” and “Breaking Down”.
You can pre-order it right HERE.
A tour will surely follow. My guess is we will see her in much bigger venues this
time around.

The Wedge Presents: Osheaga 2011 Special
Posted on | September 13, 2011 | No Comments

Damian Abraham (Fucked Up‘s ringleader) has been doing a heckuva job since
becoming the host with the most of Muchmusic‘s “The Wedge” back in January.
Doing tons of interviews with bands and airing a few specials along the way.
For this one, 45 minutes is devoted to those 3 days at Parc Jean-Drapeau
for the Osheaga Music Festival last week of July.
You get interviews with fellow performers Broken Social Scene’s Kevin Drew
(a frequent replacement host when needed) Shad, The Pains Of Being Pure At
Heart and City And Colours‘s Dallas Green.
You also get performance footage from all (except Shad) and Damian goes to
visit Primitive Records and where you go to get the tastiest bagel in the
514 and that would be Bagel St-Viateur.
And you get to see the backstage area (Artist World) where fun shenanigans
may occur but does not.
Here’s part one:
To watch the rest, you may go here.
