2010 Mercury Prize Nominations Announced
Posted on | July 20, 2010 | No Comments

For the last 18 years, The Mercury Prize is awarded each year to what
is considered to be the best album released in the United Kingdom.
Previous winners includes:
Primal Scream, Suede, Portishead, Pulp, PJ Harvey, Franz Ferdinand,
Artic Monkeys, Klaxons, Elbow and Speech Debelle at last year’s ceremony.
Some of those Mercury winners could be considred questionable at best (M People?
Talvin Singh?) but i’d say they get those nominations right about 75% of the time.
This year’s shortlist:
Biffy Clyro – Only Revolutions
Corinne Bailey Rae – The Sea
Dizzee Rascal – Tongue N’ Cheek

Kit Downes Trio – Golden
Foals – Total Life Forever
I Am Kloot – Sky At Night

Laura Marling – I Speak Because I Can
Mumford & Sons – Sigh No More
Paul Weller – Wake Up The Nation
Villagers – Becoming A Jackal
Wild Beasts – Two Dancers
The XX – XX
Decent enough list.
But I gotta ask … no We Were Promised Jetpacks? Doves? Sky Larkin?
Manic Street Preachers? Four Tet?
All released outstanding albums (IMHO) last year.
Every year, the list always has these “who the hell are they?” picks like
Kit Downes Trio? or Villagers? but that’s what an award like this is for,
making new discoveries.
From my own personal tastes I would have Biffy Clyro, Mumford & Sons and
The XX in my top 3 and probably The XX for the win.
Who do you think will win? Who’s missing on the list?
The winner shall be announced on September 7th.

Ok Go – “End Love”
A very colorful day spent in a park.
Directed By OK Go, Eric Gunther & Jeff Lieberman.
A stop motion / timelapse video, their whole routine/choreography took 21
hours to shoot, all in one glorious take from start to finish.
You can read an interview @ Spinner with the band about the process of making this video.
This song is taken from their latest album “Of The Blue Colour Of The Sky”.
Nada Surf – “Electrocution”
Nada Surf going through the Four Seasons in a visually arresting manner.
Directed by Eli Stonberg.
“Electrocution” was first written and performed by Bill Fox, former lead
singer and guitarist of Cleveland Garage Pop band The Mice.
Their new release, a covers album titled “if I had a hi-fi” is out now.
Two Hours Traffic – “Noisemaker”
A brightly colored, animated / performance video of this girl’s journey
to see the band in the big city.
Directed by Richie Mitchell and Adrian Carter.
This melodious slice of power pop goodness is the opening track from last
year’s criminally overlooked album “Territory”.

Beck’s Record Club: Kick
Posted on | July 2, 2010 | 1 Comment

Here it is:
( Album ) Beck’s Record Club: INXS’s Kick ( 2010 )
01. Guns In The Sky
02. New Sensation
03. Devil Inside
04. Need You Tonight
05. Mediate
06. Loved One
07. Wild Life
08. Never Tear Us Apart
09. Mystify
10. Kick
11. Calling All Nations
12. Tiny Daggers
The fourth installment in Beck’s Record club.
The lowdown from the man himself:
Joining in this time we had three of my favorite bands — Liars, Annie Clark
and Daniel Hart from St. Vincent, Sergio Dias from the legendary Brazilian
band Os Mutantes, as well as RC veteran Brian Lebarton, just back from the
Charlotte Gainsbourg tour.
The record covered this time was 1987 blockbuster ‘Kick’ by INXS.
The record was chosen by fellow Aussie, Angus from the Liars. It was recorded
in a little over 12 hours on March 3rd, 2010. It was an intense, hilarious,
daunting and completely fun undertaking. Thanks to everybody for being there
and putting so much into it. Many classic moments, inspired performances
and occasional anarchy.
You can download the previous 3 Record Clubs here, here and here.
This week, Beck finally revealed the club’s 5th entry and this may be the weirdest one of all.
You ready?

“Live At The Acropolis” by Yanni.
That’s right kids … Yanni.
That long-haired, Mustachioed Greek keyboardist who assaulted our senses in the
early 90’s with cheezy, piano based New Age music.
Released in 1994, that live album went on to sale 7 million copies and it’s
PBS special aired constantly for many a years, helped raised $13 million
for PBS stations and was seen in over 65 countries.
Beck brought in several studio musicians, Thurston Moore from Sonic Youth
and Tortoise to round out this baffling undertaking.
“Santorini” is the first track off the album.
