Freeze, Turkeys! Black Dynamite Gets Animated
Posted on | August 12, 2011 | No Comments

One of my favorite movie of 2009 and possibly ever, Black Dynamite has just morphed into an animated series for Cartoon Network’s Adult Swim which will see the light of day Spring 2012.
From the minds of Scott Sanders and Black Dynamite himself Michael Jai White, it’s a continuation/spin-off of the film. All your favorites are back: Byron Minns as Bullhorn, Tommy Davidson as Cream Corn, and Kym Whitley as Honeybee.
For the uninitiated, Black Dynamite was a spoof of everything that made 1970s blaxploitation films so awesome and unintentionally hilarious. It did poorly in the theaters when it was released but it has already attained cult classic status in DVD form.
Trailer:
A sequel to the movie will surely happen one of these days but in the meantime, this badass new animated series will do.
In this debut episode:
Black Dynamite is assigned to stop a rogue educational show puppet from executing his diabolical plan on national TV.
Here’s the 11-minute series pilot for y’all:

Pop Montreal 2011: Lineup So Far
Posted on | August 4, 2011 | No Comments

Now that Osheaga‘s over and done with, time to turn our attention to the finest
indie music festival our fine city has to offer: Pop Montreal.
Already a decade old, this year’s shenanigans will go down September 21st to
the 25th.
To celebrate it’s 10th year, Pop decided to go BIG and announced this week that
local heroes Arcade Fire will perform a free outdoor show downtown @
the Place Des Festivals of Quartier Des Spectacles September 22nd.
All this to celebrate Pop’s anniversary, give thanks to the fans, the local scene and to close out the exceptional year they’ve had with the Grammy/Juno winning album “The Suburbs” whose deluxe edition was released this week.
It also coincides with the launch of the French version of Tracy Kidder’s book
Mountains Beyond Mountains – a book that deeply marked the band. They will
also use this opportunity to encourage donations to KANPE to help Haiti get back on it’s feet.
This really will be a grand start for the festival, but who else will show
up you ask?
Big names this year includes Gillian Welch and Jeff Magnum (Neutral Milk Hotel) whose show is already sold out. You got local french troubadour Jean Leloup with a new album in hands, Stephen Malkmus & The Jicks, The Raincoats, Power Pop legends Redd Kross, Peter Hook and his backing band The Light performing Joy Division’s “Unknown Pleasures”, which should be interesting.
Local bands like Les Breastfeeders, CFCF, Chromeo, Miracle Fortress and Grimes.
My personal picks would have to be Asobi Seksu, Japandroids, Tahiti 80, Yuck,
Liam Finn, Fucked Up, Laura Marling and tUnE-yArDs.
These few names are only but a drop in the bucket. The full and complete schedule
should be released early next month. Do check out the complete list (so far) of
artists/bands here.
Most of the bands mentioned, tickets to their shows are already on sale
and can be purchased over HERE.
Or you can go the packages route and live those 5 days in grand style.
Or if you’re from out-of-town, win a trip which includes flights, hotel and
passes for the week.
There’s also Film Pop to consider which this year’s program includes 3 films
worth checking out:
“Upside Down: The Creation Records Story” which documents the story behind Allan McGee’s Creation Records.
“PJ Harvey: Let England Shake” which is 12 short films shot by war photographer Seamus Murphy for this album.
“Color Me Obsessed: A Film About The Replacements” which is the first documentary on influential ’80s indie-rock band, The Replacements.
Quick mention here of Tyler Rauman who won the first ever Pop Montreal tee-shirt design contest. It’s the logo you see on top of this post but he’s also the dude who created my banner for this blog lo these many years ago. Big ups to this fine talent.
