We Carry On
11 000+ people showed up on a chilly Fall night to witness the return of
Portishead after a 13 years absence.
Last time they were here (March 1998), Our favorite Bristolians had a memorable
2 night stay in a VERY sold out Metropolis.
This time around, they went for an outdoor show @ the Jacques-Cartier Pier in Old Montreal where Björk (2007) and Sigur Rós (2008), brought their own brand of innovative music to the eager crowd.
While more than half of the setlist was dedicated to songs from their last album “Third”, we did get to hear gems from their debut “Dummy” like “Mysterions”, “Sour Times” and a stone cold beautiful version of “Wandering Star”, done in a stripped down fashion by the core trio of Gibbons, Barrow and Utley.
Speaking of the trio, Beth Gibbons‘s voice has been untouched by time. Still as beautiful, haunting and longing as ever. Geoff Barrow, the mastermind behind all the music still got the chops, especially on those decks during the breakdowns on “Over” and and “Glory Box” which got everybody jazzed up and personally gave me goose bumps. Adrian Utley always brings beautiful sonic textures with his guitar on records and especially live.
Not much was said in between songs but during “We Carry On”, Beth got off stage and shook hands/high fived people in the first row which was quite unexpected and a nice surprise.
This was 90 minutes of pure musicianship on display with a few music-gasms given along the way.
I pray we don’t have to wait another 13 years to see them again.
Here’s videos of last night’s performance I managed to capture:

Scene 1425: Fall Season Schedule

Us Montrealers are lucky to have great show promoters in Blue Skies Turn Black, Evenko and Greenland.
Something that was seriously lacking in the rest of the Quebecois province, especially on the indie music front and that’s when Scene 1245 came into the picture.
Located in the Laval suburbs, it was the brain child of Julien Aidelbaum who proposed to the folks running the André Mathieu venue, that they used said venue and la Maison Des Arts to bring to the Lavallois people cultural events in their neck of the woods.
Artists/bands like Andrew W.K., IAM, Los Campesinos!, Matt & Kim and Phantogram who made a point to schedule a stop there and even sometimes skipping Montreal all together.
Their Fall schedule is chock-full of goodness none more so then with my favorite Canuck band of the moment, Timber Timbre who, coming off a Polaris Prize nomination for their fantabulous album “Creep On Creepin’ On”, will do a small tour of the province through them starting this Wednesday:
10.05 – Joliette, QC – Salle Rolland-Brunelle
10.06 – Quebec, QC – Theatre Petit Champlain
10.07 – Terrebonne, QC – Moulin Neuf
10.08 – Sherbrooke, QC – Theatre Granada
10.09 – Victoriaville, QC – Cinéma Laurier
10.10 – Laval, QC – Maison Des Arts De Laval
The Laval show is scheduled 2 whole months before they play Montreal again December 3rd @ St. Jean Baptiste Church in the Plateau so I would definitely get on that.
Little Scream, Jean Leloup And The Last Assassins and Handsome Furs are also listed to perform in Laval before the end of the year.
Both venues are at walking distance (5 minutes away) from the Montmorency Métro Station.

Here’s the latest Timber Timbre music video released by the band to wet your appetite:

Pop Montreal 2011: Or How Arcade Fire Took Over My Week
Posted on | September 26, 2011 | No Comments

While I missed out on Wednesday’s Metropolis show, I did attend Thursday’s free
downtown show @ Place Des Festivals with 100 000+ of their closest friends to
celebrate Pop and it’s decade of existence:
Then on Saturday, the first annual Pop Vs. Jock Basketball tournament @ McGill University Sports Center.
A charity game organized by the Butler Bros. with friends like Vampire Weekend’s Chris Tomson, Miracle Fortress’s Graham Van Pelt and NBA players like Matt Bonner and Paul Shirley on the Pop Team. On Team Jock, it was a lineup stacked with members of the McGill Redman and Concordia Stingers. Charity is good for the soul, and often gives you a break on your income tax, and what better way to support a good cause then to play a little Basketball.

Entertainment was provided by Régine Chassagne on the organ and by Kid Koala on the decks while Richard Reed Parry was the half-time show with his DRONES/Revelations projects and many many bicycles running in circles.
The ending was quite the nail bitter with Pop taking the first trophy with a 106-100 win over them Jocks.
Concluding last night with the festival’s closing party in Église St-Édouard‘s basement where a “Super Special Guests” was listed on the bill.
It turned out to be Will Butler, Richard Reed Parry, Tim Kingsbury and Jeremy Gara as Phi Slamma Jamma, a cover band of 60’s, punk and country tuneage. The Clash, Devo, Everly Brothers and Ramones were part of the setlist. They hit the stage at midnight and blazed through a 45 minute set of song they had barely just learned the night before.
It was great fun and a nice way to cap off the week.
