2009 Ontario Virgin Music Festival ( Lineup Announced )

Posted on | July 14, 2009 | No Comments

At long last, the Ontario (not Toronto’s) Virgin Music Festival lineup
has been unveiled.

It shall go down August 29-30.

Goodbye Toronto Islands Park, hello Burl’s Creek! which is near Orillia,
Ontario
, down highway 400, an hour trek from downtown Toronto … or so
i’m told.

The reason for the move?

“We’ve always wanted to bring the European festival experience to Canada,”
says Virgin Festival director Andrew Bridge. “[Virgin President] Richard
Branson has always told us, ‘you guys throw a great party, it’s just too
bad you can’t do camping.'”

Here’s the lineup (with more to be announced in the coming weeks):

Saturday, August 29

Pixies
Franz Ferdinand
Ben Harper & The Relentless7
Paolo Nutini
Grizzly Bear
Mates Of State
Sloan
Lights
Plants & Animals
Down With Webster
The Rural Alberta Advantage
Iglu & Hartly
Anjulie
Candy Coated Killahz

Sunday, August 30

Nine Inch Nails
Pet Shop Boys
Our Lady Peace
N.E.R.D.
Cold War Kids
Mute Math
Mew
Thunderheist
Coeur De Pirate
The Von Bondies
Datarock
HyperCrush
Trouble Andrew
Silver Starling
The D’Urbervilles
Sean Kingston
Melanie Fiona
The New Cities

Pretty eclectic lineup fo’ sure.

The biggest draws for me and i’m sure most of the people who
will show up this year will be NIN (their last show on Canuck
soil
) and Pixies. Franz Ferdinand, Grizzly Bear, Sloan, Mute
Math, Mew
… are bands I’d see headline a show any day of the week.

Now, as for the whole camping situation? gotta say, not my favorite
thing to do but it would be something interesting to experience.
More interesting will be to see how many people will actually
go for it and rough it out with thousands of their fellow Virgin-goers.

Each camp sites will cost you 100$ for 2 days (135$ for 3).
Get the lowdown here.

Virgin as also provided a list of hotels near the site where you can
set up shop.

There will be shuttles leaving from the Barrie Bus Terminal to get
to the festival site.

Weekend Passes
are 99$ and the VIP Weekend Passes will set you back
275$ bones.

They go on sale this Saturday @ Noon.

St. Vincent – “Actor Out Of Work”

St. Vincent (a.k.a. Annie Clark) sitting in a big, empty hangar, actors all
lined up to audition for her. She stares them down one by one as they cry
into submission. Directed by Terri Timely.

Miss Clark will be in town August 7th playing @ La Sala Rossa.

Emiliana Torrini – “Jungle Drum”

A soundstage created jungle mixed with crazy outfits. Wackiness ensues.
Directed by Price James.

Emiliana will be @ the Cabaret Music Hall August 13th.

The Veils – “The Letter”

A very simple performance video for the first single off their new
album “Sun Gangs” and one of my favorite songs of the year so far.
Directed by Iain Forsyth & Jane Pollard.

Catch them @ La Sala Rossa July 28th! part of the “In The City”
portion of the Osheaga Music Festival.

Grandaddy – “The Crystal Lake”

There’s already two videos out (“I Am Lost” and “It’s The Weekend”)
for Jason Lytle’s just released debut solo album “Yours Truly, The Commuter”
but I chose this video instead as it is one of my favorites
from his Grandaddy days, which is off their 2000 breakout album
“The Sophtware Slump”. Directed by Jake & Jim.

Jason shall be here tomorrow night playing @ the Petit Campus.

Here’s something I never thought I’d blog about … a new Hope Sandoval
album.

That’s right kids! and it only took her 8 years to make it happen.

She’s either a total perfectionists (hence the long wait) or she’s
a hardcore slacker which would make us kindred spirits.

But mostly according to this Rolling Stone write-up about the new
album, she’s got no concept of time: “I don’t really notice the
time,” says Sandoval coyly. “We don’t keep track of the days and
months. And the years.”

This new album is with her band The Warm Inventions which includes
Colm Ó Cíosóig, drummer and a founding member of My Bloody Valentine,
who co-wrote and produced the album with Hope much like they did with
their very much underrated 2001 debut album “Bavarian Fruit Bread”.

The Warm Inventions will hit the road this fall, doing a few shows
here and in Europe. Hope is well known for being a notoriously shy
performer onstage so for her to hit the road like that, it’s an
event no to be missed.

The first single “Blanchard” will be released August 4th.

You can pre-order it on Amazon.

She’ll also appear as a guest vocalist on the new Massive Attack
record tentatively titled “Weather Underground” coming out in October.

But the biggest news of all from that RS article is that Mazzy Star
is working on a new album. Their last release was 1996’s “Among My Swan”
but they’re mostly known for their classic 1993 album “So Tonight That I
Might See”
which featured dream pop/slowcore gems like “Fade Into You”
and my all-time favorite “Into Dust”.

“It’s true we’re still together,” she says. “We’re almost finished
[with the record]. But I have no idea what that means.”

Let’s hope she and her Mazzy Star partner David Roback figures it out.

Post-rock enthusists Caspian are back with the release of their 2nd album
titled “Tertia” which comes out August 7 in all of Europe and 4 days
later here in North America.

At 10 tracks and just about an hour of new intrumental music, giving us
post rock lovers quite the bang for our bucks.

They’ve often been compared to Austin‘s Explosions In The Sky and rightly
so as both bands creates similar sonic, atmospheric landscapes and in love
with distorted chords, feedback and big, bombastic crescendos but I just
feel that Caspian has that extra Oomph in them with an added shoegazian
dissonance that EitS lacks.

Much like EitS, Caspian must be experienced live. You’ll get a chance
to at the end of August as an Northeast mini-tour is in the works in conjuncture
will the album’s release. Then on to Europe for 6 weeks starting at the beginning of September.

Here’s a track from the new album titled “Of Foam And Wave”.

You can pre-order the album here. They’ve also posted a trailer
promoting “Tertia” on YouTube.
