Autolux: 2 New Songs (Performed Live) Showing Up Online
Posted on | July 20, 2011 | No Comments

Any reasons I have to post anything and everything about my favorite
Art/Experimental/Noise/Shoegaze rock band Autolux I take.
It’s been almost a year now since the release of “Transit Transit”, their
quite underrated sophomore album.
Even I, ardent Autolux fan that I am, took a few listens to REALLY get
into this opus.
But now that it’s been a year since it’s release, what as Greg, Carla and
Eugene been up to?
Well … mostly Carla has kept busy. Recently, she guest drummed @ a Flying Lotus
show last month @ The Music Box in Los Angeles. Someone YT’ed that moment:
Her drumming was purely improvisational which just shows you what mad skills
she’s got pounding on those skins.
She also contributed a Beatles cover of “Tomorrow Never Knows” to the soundtrack of the god awful, putrid and down right terrible movie “Sucker Punch”, with The Kills/Dead Weather hottie Alison Mosshart on vocals.
Did you know there was a magazine strictly about female drummers?
Yup, it’s Tom Tom Magazine and of course, smart people that they are,
they interviewed Miss Azar.
2 weeks ago, they performed a show @ The Skirtball Cultural Center in
relations to their opening of the Houdini: Art and Magic exhibit where
a space-y/trippy untitled new song was tried out on the people in
attendance:
And back in February, while in Japan for the ATP’s I’ll Be Your Mirror
festival, a new synth heavy/beat oriented song was unveiled aswell:
Is a new album in the works?
Your guess is as good has mine.
They already have 2 songs in the can so I call that progress. Hopefully,
it won’t be at that pace, 2 new songs a year until the album is ready
to be released in 2016.
Only time will tell.

Introducing: Aim Low
Posted on | July 18, 2011 | No Comments

Pauly here, wanting to give you the 514 on this brand new local band on zee scene.
A trio of Shoegazers/Noise Poppers/Droners made up of O.H. (guitar / effects / vocals) D.A. (guitar / effects / bass / vocals) and L.F. (bowed bass / laptop / guitar / effects / vocals). They can also be heard Thursday evenings on the fine college radio known as CJLO.
Quite a bunch of overchievers.
Someone described their sound thusly:
Endless guitar drones or obscure and intense human screams are piercing these clouds of sounds, forming images that can be seen for short times beneath the fog of heavenly heavy haze of feedbacks.
That pretty much covers it.
A wide range of influences can be attributed to their sounds. From bands and artists as varied as My Bloody Valentine, Brian EnoNadja, Rhys Chatham, Southpacific, Jesu and Sonic Youth to name just a few.
These noisemakers are effect pedals junkies.
There is not a pedal outthere they have not set their feet on. Anything that distorts,
echoes, makes it squeal or manages to blend in their wall of feedbacks, they are down with.
Their first release, a 2-song EP titled “Foulards” is already out of print.
These lovely hand made CD-Rs are now part of the legend that will be Aim Low so hold on to your copy till they become indie famous so that you can unload it on Ebay for a large sum of sweet cash.
You can hear both tracks on their Bandcamp page:
Or you may download the EP right here.
A 12” will be recorded in the coming weeks and shall see the light of day
come Fall.
They were interviewed by local weekly The Hour, where you can find out how they came to be and the origin of the Aim Low name.
They have a few live dates scheduled for the next few weeks:
07.22 – Toronto, ON – Sneaky Dee’s (w/ Disappears & The Psychic Paramount)
07.23 – Montreal, QC – Casa Del Popolo (w/ Disappears & The Psychic Paramount)
08.12 – Montreal, QC – Cagibi (w/ Book Slave & Archery Guild)
Here’s a preview of what to expect:
This was shot @ my favorite venue La Sala Rossa back in May.
You can follow their shenanigans on Twitter where they have dub this season the #summerofnoise.

Portishead Announces Fall North American Tour
Posted on | July 11, 2011 | No Comments

Their first since 1998, where they had a stop right here in Montreal playing
the Metropolis and as you would expect, it was mind-bogglingly good.
This time out, they’re doing a short run of North American cities (10 to be exact)
in October coinciding with their appearance @ the All Tommorow’s Parties
in Asbury Park, New Jersey, of which they are the curators for this year’s
edition.
Portishead has an amazingly loyal following, and a North American tour has spawned buzz on the web and probably even conference calls among die hard fans.
Here’s what guitarist Adrian Utley has to say about this short North American jaunt:
“We’ve always thought that we must come back to tour in the states, something
we wanted to do with the release of Third, but our schedule just wouldn’t allow it.
Being that we were asked to curate I’ll be your Mirror, this just seemed like a
good start to touring the states – it set’s it off in absolutely the right way.
We are absolutely delighted to come back.”
They will be in Montreal October 7th for an outdoor show @ Jacques-Cartier Pier.
Thought Forms will open for their entire run.
From now till the 14th, a limited run of tickets will be available
through the Portishead website.
Tickets for the Montreal show will go on sale this Saturday @ 10am
(55$ in adv, 60$ at the door) @ evenko.ca or @ Bell Centre ticket
booths.
10.01 – Asbury Park, NJ – I’ll Be Your Mirror Festival
10.02 – Asbury Park, NJ – I’ll Be Your Mirror Festival

10.23 – Seattle, WA – WaMu Theater
10.24 – Vancouver, British Columbia – PNE Forum
10.27 – Denver, CO – 1st Bank Center
Will be nice to hear Beth Gibbons soothing voice behind those wicked
Trip Hop beats once again. Having the 90’s flooding right back like this
in 2011 like it never left, makes me feel warm all over.
