Welshians by birth but now London-based, rock threesome The Joy Formidable
will hit our shores this coming May to promote their self-produced first EP
(or is it mini-album?) “A Balloon Called Moaning”, set to be released
through Passion Pit’s Ayad Al Adhamy new label Black Bell on May 4th.

I discovered them thanks to their very catchy debut single “Austere”.

Then, they did something very smart in that they offered their entire album
for free on NME back in early 2009 which gave them lots of attention in the
UK press and from that gesture, soon a fan base started to grow.

For me, the fact that they were a throwback to mid-90’s female fronted bands
like Belly, Throwing Muses or Lush with their crunchy/fuzzy guitars and great
melodious hooks, sealed the deal.

Going on their first headlining tour of North America, Montreal was lucky enough
to make the cut.

New single “Popinjay” came out earlier this month. A preview of their upcoming
debut album which should see the light of day later this year.
