Telekinesis / Solid Gold / Fol Chen / An Horse @ Mercury Lounge ( 06. 14. 2009 )

Last day in New York was pretty much spent in Central Park tough a
good chunk of it was closed due to the Puerto Rican Day Parade.

Damn them! and their pride! (I kid of course).

Then on to the required visit to Katz’s Deli where dinner was enjoyed
with my gal pal Marie (how you doin’) which I must say their famous
smoked meat, not as tasty as our own famous meat served at Schwartz’s
Deli
right here on “The Main”.

We beat their meat.

Hard.

Then on to the main event next door at the Mercury Lounge to see
Telekinesis (a.k.a. Michael Benjamin Lerner). A venue I’ve heard
about for years and years, all the great NYC bands/ artists
who’ve played there at one time or another. The place is so very
tiny which I did not expect but home-y.

Something nice happened that night. All 3 opening bands
were actually good. This rarely happens to me. usually, one
or two of them will inevitably bring tha suck but not on
this night.

I quite enjoyed Minneapolis’s Solid Gold brand of synth/dance/
electro/indie rock jams.

Lead singer Zak Coulter could pass up as SNL’s Bill Heder baby
brother. The resemblance is uncanny.

Up next was Fol Chen who also dabbled in the synth/dance/electro
rock world. They did a killer, nut crunching rendition of
Mariah Carey’s “Emotions” (see video). It was either this or
a Beastie Boys cover, the crowd chose wisely.

Then it was Australian twosome An Horse’s turn to hit the stage.
Loves me some distorted, fuzzed out guitars an singer/guitarist
Kate Cooper delivered. I’m loving this new wave of female fronted
rock bands we seem to be getting right now. Ida Maria, Sky Larkin,
Blood Red Shoes
… you can now add An Horse to the list.

Finally … Telekinesis. Perfect ending to this hot spring night.
Just some sweet, bouncy, indie rock-ish power pop. Just Lerner on drums
wearing his brand new “Where’s Waldo?” shirt which was talked about quite
a bit, some great eye candy (bassist sure wa purty) and we had an
un-announced cameo by Nada Surf lead singer Matthew Caws singing
backing vocals on the night’s closer “Coast Of Carolina”.

Telekinesis still as a week left on this current tour with An
Horse playing a few dates on the west coast.

Solid Gold - “Synchronize”

Fol Chen - “Emotions” (Mariah Carey Cover)

An Horse - “Horizons”

Telekinesis - “Tokyo”

Telekinesis - “Imaginary Friend”

Telekinesis - “Coast Of Carolina”
(Nada Surf’s Matthew Caws on backing vocals)

I love love love The Mercury Lounge. It definitely is smaller than what you’d expect, you’re right. But I’ve never have a bad time there. Dammit don’t go to New York without me again!! lol
